Breast cancer – another reason it doesn’t pay to be a poor woman
All the talk about poverty not being the worse thing aside, there are very real drawbacks to not having money. Yes, it’s possible to be happy even if you don’t have money, but overall, poverty is an unfortunate circumstance. Many poor people die because they cannot afford health care and there is nothing pretty or inspiring about being sick and not being able to get proper care because you don’t have money.
In “Gap between rich and poor women who survive breast cancer grows as disease progresses”, writer Daniel Martin mentions a study which shows that “women from poorer backgrounds are far less likely to survive breast cancer than those from affluent areas”.
This is hardly any surprise. Rich women can afford to pay for specialists and to spend any amount of money on trying to cure their cancer. This is not a luxury that most poor women can afford.
