Why are rich people mean?
Dear Richbitch, I’ve been thinking. Why is that most people when they become rich forget their manners and behave obnoxiously? Does being rich means not being a good human being? Curious
Dear Curious, I have never really known any truly rich people personally. I know some people who are very well off but not necessarily rich. I’ve known some people who have gone on to become rich and famous, but my association with them ended before fame struck and fortune rained down. As such my answer to this question should be considered to be based on generalizations and assumptions.
People who have money tend to think they are better than people who don’t; and this is not necessarily their own fault.
The rich are generally treated like they’re better. They are kowtowed to. They are fawned over. They are openly envied, openly ogled, openly worshiped because they have money. How can they not think they are better? Furthermore, how can they not regard with disdain any person who would volunteer to wipe their soiled bottom in the hope that money will rub off on them instead of feces? Sorry if I’m going into gross territory with that one; but the point is, rich people behave obnoxiously because they are given reason and right to do so by the rest of us.
No one likes to be liked because of what they have and what they can do for another person; and when you’re rich most people like you because of what you have and what you can do for them. This is not to suggest there aren’t some rich people who are just plain snobs who think other people are beneath them; but certainly there is no truth to the notion that the rich are better. It is a widespread opinion that the rich are better and that opinion is mostly held in the minds of those who are not rich, and because they have this mentality they treat the rich as if they are indeed better and in so doing give them power.
