Are women married to rich men happier than women married to poor men?

Dear Rosie, different things make different people happy. Having money will usually make life more comfortable, so it can be argued that women who are married to rich men are more comfortable than women who are married to poor men. Women who are married to rich men probably experience less money-related stress than women who are married to poor men and that would tend to make it appear that women who are married to rich men are happier than women who are married to poor men; but that is not necessarily the case.

It is common knowledge that a person can be rich and still be unhappy. Just because you have nothing to worry about financially doesn’t automatically mean you’re happy. What usually makes women happy in marriages has more to do with their relationship with their spouse and less to do with money. For that reason, it’s just as possible for a woman who is married to a poor man to be happy as it is for a woman who is married to a rich man to be unhappy.

Money will usually only be a factor determining happiness for women who marry for money; and in that case these women don’t marry poor men anyway, so the question only becomes relevant if their rich husband suddenly becomes destitute.
